What do you get when you mix wine, tequila, and bacon? A drink inspired by my life story.

I had already planned to do a post today reminding everyone of the fabulous #SOTG contests — because who can deal with looking up old posts to find all the terms? — and Kelly Mantoan just made my job a whole lot easier by giving me something new and fabulous to post with it.

We all think of Kelly’s blog, This Ain’t the Lyceum, as our go-to spot for amazing posts that alternate between being poignant, instructive, and choking-on-your-coffee hilarious, but she has outdone herself this time. She just put up a post that not only redefined “epic selfie, ” but include a video for her entry into the SOTG drink contest. A VIDEO!

Kelly has read my memoir, she’s familiar with my blog, and we’ve had lots of email exchanges. She knows quite a bit about me, and she thought deeply of what she knows of my life before concocting a beverage that would capture its essence. And the ingredients for that drink include:

  • Wine
  • Tequila
  • Malt liquor
  • Hot sauce
  • Bacon liqueur

Truly, this woman is a visionary.

Go read her post to see how you can make this revolutionary concoction right in your own home, and enjoy her instructional video below. There are quite a few other equally amazing recipes among the entries, so you’ll need to bring some serious A-game to win the Create a SOTG Drink contest. (Reminder details below!)

Also, now that Kelly has raised the bar, I guess I’m obliged to post a video of myself making and drinking the winning concoction?

sotg-party

Below are nine different ways you can do awesome things to be entered to win awesome stuff. A few important details:

  • All of the contests begin right now and will end on Friday, May 16 at 11:59 PM CDT.
  • I will be on email and replying to comments to address any questions, but give me some time to respond. Things are crazy over here so I’ll probably get backlogged.
  • You can enter as many of the contests as you’d like.

Here we go!

1. BUY THE BOOK BETWEEN APRIL 29 AND MAY 16

PRIZE: $100 Amazon gift card

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+boughtbook@gmail.com simply stating “I bought a copy.” If you buy more than one copy, please send one email for each copy you bought.

RULES:

  • You can enter for each copy purchased. (For example, if you buy four copies, send four separate emails to enter.)
  • You do not have to show a receipt to enter, but we will ask for proof of purchase from the winner.
  • If you win, the date of purchase on the receipt must be in the date range of April 29 to May 16.
  • Ebook, hardcover, or audibook purchases count.
  • Purchases from any vendor count.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

2. BUY MORE THAN TWO COPIES OF THE BOOK

PRIZE: iPad Mini

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+copies@gmail.com simply saying how many copies you bought.

RULES:

  • You do not have to show a receipt to enter, but we will ask for proof of purchase from the winner.
  • If you win, the dates of purchase on the receipts cannot be later than May 16.
  • Ebook, hardcover, or audibook purchases count.
  • Purchases from any vendor count.
  • These purchases count toward contest #1 (above) as well.
  • Purchases from any time count (i.e. pre-orders count the same as regular orders).
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

3. WRITE A REVIEW OF THE BOOK ON A RETAILER SITE

PRIZE: $100 Amazon gift card

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+review@gmail.com with a link to your review.

RULES:

  • Reviews at Amazon are preferable, but reviews at any online outlet that sells the book are great too. (Amazon will begin allowing reviews on 4/29.)
  • Even though GoodReads is not a retailer, we’ll count GoodReads reviews too.
  • The date of the review must be before May 17.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

4. WRITE ABOUT THE BOOK ON YOUR BLOG

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card +
a post here at my site introducing your blog to my readers

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+blogreview@gmail.com with a link to your review.

RULES:

  • Something Other than God has to be a central part of the post (e.g. it can’t only be one of your items in 7 Quick Takes, or mentioned in passing in one place).
  • The post does not have to be a standard review (e.g. If the book inspires a reflection on a certain subject or a story you’d like to tell from your own life, that’s great!)
  • The post must contain a link to somewhere where you can buy the book (this is a good chance to use your Amazon affiliate code!)
  • The post must be published before May 17.
  • In order to qualify for the introduction to my readers, your blog can’t be total craziness. I’m not going to be strict about this — at all — but, ya know, if you have a site called IDespiseCatholicsandPeopleWhoseNamesStartWiththeLetterJ.net, that’s not going to work.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

5. RECOMMEND THE BOOK TO THREE OR MORE PEOPLE WHO DON’T READ MY BLOG

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+tellfriend@gmail.com with the first names and last initials of whom you told (for example: “I recommended Something Other than God to Karen P., Mark S., and Thomas K.”)

RULES:

  • It’s fine to take your best guess about who doesn’t currently follow my blog — you don’t need to start an inquisition to smoke out closet readers before you begin your recommendations.
  • Imaginary friends don’t count.
  • This is on the honor system! If you say you told three people, I believe you.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

6. GATHER A BOOK CLUB OF FOUR OR MORE PEOPLE TO READ THE BOOK

PRIZE: $75 gift card to a restaurant of your choice to get food for your gathering +
a 15 minute live Skype chat with me

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+bookclub@gmail.com with a link to an Evite or other online invitation showing four or more attendees.

RULES:

  • The primary purpose of the meeting should be discussion of Something Other than God.
  • It would be great if all attendees wanted to buy the book, but it’s not a requirement (library copies okay).
  • You need to create the invite and enter by May 16, but the meeting itself can occur any time before June 30.
  • One entry per group.
  • You can choose the restaurant, but it needs to offer gift cards for sale online.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.
  • I will arrange my schedule around the winner’s book club meeting to do the Skype interview. However, if the meeting happens to occur in one of the rare blocks of time I absolutely couldn’t do it, we can make special arrangements for the video call.

7. TAKE THE MOST EPIC SELFIE WITH THE BOOK

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card +
your selfie MADE INTO A T-SHIRT that
I will post A PICTURE OF MYSELF WEARING

(oh my gosh this is just so awesome!!!)

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+selfie@gmail.com with a link to your picture (if you posted it on a private social media account you can attach the picture to the email, but links are preferable)

RULES:

  • This is not a random drawing. This is a performance-based contest that will be evaluated by an esteemed group of judges, so you’ll need to bring your A-game.
  • Selfies with any version of the book count (hardcover, ebook, or audiobook).
  • You should know that my entire life is about to revolve around looking at these entries.

8. TAKE A PICTURE OF THE BOOK IN THE WEIRDEST PLACE

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card +
your photo turned into magnets: one for your fridge, one for mine

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+weirdplace@gmail.com with a link to your picture (if you posted it on a private account you can attach the picture to the email, but links are preferable).

RULES:

  • This is not a random drawing. This is a performance-based contest that will be evaluated by an esteemed group of judges, so you’ll need to bring your A-game.
  • Pictures of any version of the book count (hardcover, ebook, or audiobook).
  • I don’t know if I will ever sleep again once these entries start coming in.

9. CREATE A NEW DRINK CALLED THE SOTG

PRIZE: $25 gift card to Williams-Sonoma +
the recipe posted on my blog with credit to you

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+drink@gmail.com with the recipe and a brief description of the drink.

RULES:

  • This is not a random drawing. This is a performance-based contest, so you’ll need to bring your A-game.
  • I will have a team of intrepid taste testers throughout the country trying these out, so let’s avoid exotic ingredients. (And I note that while fried scorpion garnish might not be exotic for me, it would be for other people, so it’s out. Sorry.)
  • It does not have to be an alcoholic drink. (A piece of Joe will die every time he sees a non-alcoholic recipe, but we’ll just exempt him from judging those.)

Happy book buying and drink mixing and selfie taking!

Do you have an Ariel wig? Because I’m pretty sure that would be necessary. Also probably stilts, because I think Jen is about a million feet taller than any mere mortal.

When I heard that Kelly was in the running and no scorpions were allowed, I quietly bowed out. No one can beat Kelly. My original thought was an Easter Morning Sunrise — tequila, grenadine, oj, and a scorpion in the bottom of the drink. But yes, the bacon drink along with a video is SO much more original.

The master must win. Just give it to Kelly.

I’m probably not going to be in the running for any of these awesome contests, but I just finished your book (it arrived yesterday), and I wanted to let you know that I loved it. I would have read it just for the content, but I knew it would be enjoyable from a literary perspective as well, and it did not disappoint. Your story will be percolating away in my head for a while, as the really good ones always do. There’s a lot of truth tied up in there–a lot of truth. So thank you! And please thank you family, too, for working with you to make this happen.

    Hi, Jennifer,
I bought your book on May 10 through Amazon for my new Mother’s Day kindle. It was finished by that night- great read!
    Thanks!
    Ann

  3. Lynne says

Stupendous! Her, dressed as you, drinking it: MUST SEE. Gotta work on the accent, though. 🙂

And she left the malt liquor in the bag. Perfect.
But! Kelly– you forgot to pour some out for all the Homies who’ve been left behind! 😉

  5. Kathleen says

My book club is reading your book for our June meeting. I read it in a day!

I am awesome at drinks and will send my SOTG mojito complete with a flavor commensurate with your journey.. A sour lemon followed by a sweet basil finish.. Also this drink can be made one handed in a bathroom stall.. So you can keep reading your bible.

Quick Question: For the photo contests, is photo-shopping allowed? I’m not sure I can make it to the top of Everest in time!!! J/K . . . although, now that I mention it . . . .
