7 Posts in 7 Days: An epic blogging challenge

July 21, 2013 | 42 comments

(Actually, it’s not really epic at all. Lots of people write posts every day. But I like to add a touch of drama to my linkups, so here we go…)

7 Posts in 7 Days - EPIC

Okay, people. Start stretching your fingers, put sweatbands on your wrists, and pull out your most sturdy keyboard, because it’s time for some serious blogging. I’m going to post every day from Monday, July 22 to Sunday, July 28, and if you have a blog, you should join me. Here’s why:

  • Your readers want to hear from you. Maybe this is just me, but I love it when I see new posts from my favorite bloggers. I would rather them throw together a short, imperfect post than not update at all.
  • It’ll help you overcome perfectionism. How often has this happened to you?: You have an idea for a post that seems kind of interesting. You’re just about to type it up, but then you start second guessing it. An hour later, you’ve decided that if you were to put these thoughts into words, everyone would think that you’re the most crazy / stupid / irresponsible / weird / boring / unoriginal person in the whole world. Then someone else writes the same basic thing, and everyone on Facebook is hailing it as the most brilliant thing ever put on the internet. This is why we need deadlines: they force us to stop thinking and just write.
  • It’ll help you find your blogging groove. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve slaved over The Post that Everyone Is Going to LOVE, only to publish it and hear crickets chirping in response; then, the next week, I’ll dash out some thoughts off the top of my head, and get a great response from people saying that that’s just what they needed to hear that day. Posting frequently will help you find that (surprisingly elusive) sweet spot where what you love to write overlaps with what your readers love to read.

For those intrepid bloggers who are up to the challenge, feel free to add your blg to the linky list below so that the rest of us can follow along with your posts.

And if you don’t have a blog but like reading them, check out the list for sites that will have lots of fresh content next week.

Monday, it begins.

  1. Jessica @ Shower of Roses

Fun! I haven’t been blogging very frequently this summer and this is just the challenge I need! Thanks Jen!

  2. Rosie

Get excited for even more pictures of my kids! My mom will be ecstatic!

  3. Melody

In accordance with that wonderful picture…isn’t it cool how the word “yourselves” has the word “elves” in it?! 😉

  4. Jenny

Okay I’ll bite…I’ve been terrible lately. And you make some good points, especially about the least thought-out posts being the most popular sometimes!

    • Laura Pearl

I know–sometimes I think, “By jove, I think I’ve finally got it!” And it’s crickets. But other times, I whip off some random thoughts, and I get all sorts of comments. Even though I haven’t been posting daily lately, I do think it’s best to try to write every day.

  5. Mary

Oh my goodness, yes. Bullet point two. And yet I’m still nervous to commit because I MAY FAIL.

  6. Lisa

Um, yes- bullet points 2 & 3, about second-guessing and slaving over cricket posts! Great linkup, Jen!

  7. Sarah Reinhard

I’m in! 🙂 Thanks for not only doing this (I can’t wait to read your stuff!) but for making it a fun group activity. 🙂

  8. Jen @ Jumping in Puddles

YAY! I am excited.. a wee bit nervous for this. But, you are right… it will get me out of my comfort zone. Thanks, Jen!

And, for the record, your blog is one of those blogs that I can’t wait reading, no matter what you write about!! I can’t wait to see what you got up your sleeve. 😉

  9. priest's wife (@byzcathwife)

thanks for the inspiration…and thanks for being a generous mega-blogger to us micro-bloggers…we all appreciate the traffic 😉

  10. Danielle

What a fabulous way to encourage others to write more often. I would say that not writing enough is the biggest hurdle I need to overcome as a newbie-blogger. Thank, looking forward to reading your week of posts!

  11. Kendra Tierney

So, I keep trying to post LESS this summer and failing, so I am not linking up. BUT, if you’re looking for something to write about we’re having a little discussion over at Catholic All Year in which I try to convince you that we should fill all cry rooms with cement and some people disagree with me (shocking, right?). I made it a link up in case any of you are looking for ideas for posts this week!

  12. Christine the Soccer Mom

I so needed to get myself to write more often. And the “someone else wrote what’s been in my head” just happened to me when Elizabeth Scalia linked to a post where a woman said she’s a rebel for NOT having a tattoo. My brain said, “Ha! You dummy, you’ve been thinking of that for nearly two years!”

And maybe I”ll stop being such a theological blog and remember that part of what I used to write about is our family and fun stuff we’ve done. (That will also remind me that we still have fun.)

  13. Christine the Soccer Mom

By the way, should we have an official hashtag for us twitter geeks? #7for7 seems short & sweet, no?

  14. Emily D

Are you blogging about anything in particular, or just encouraging folks to blog?

Just curious. I hope it is ok to ask.

  15. Kerri B.

Okay, I’ll go for it! I’ve been slow in my blogging all year (on my site anyway) and could use a little push. Good thing it’s this week and not next since I know I’ll be without internet for a few days next week. Looking forward to my feed reader exploding this week! LOL!!

  16. Kelly M.

Let’s do this thing. Motivational playlist anyone??? How about starting with ‘Eye of the Tiger’?

  17. Megan at SortaCrunchy

“I would rather them throw together a short, imperfect post than not update at all.” Oh, Jen. Thank you for this encouragement. Actually, every one of your points are inspiring me to join with you in this, but giving me permission to throw out a few short, SO NOT PERFECT posts is lighting a fire under my seat.

Happy to join with you, lady.

  18. Leanne

I am at a loss with my blogging. I have much I want to say but either never have the time to finish writing or never have the time since heading back to full time work. And I’ve written stuff I’m nervous to post so perhaps if I start running short, I have those to go to…

  19. Cynthia

I needed this motivation! What a great idea 🙂

  20. Jamie

Is this just a ploy to get me to spill the details of our anaphylaxis adventure??? Oooook…I guess I can fit that one into the blogging schedule this week 😉

  21. Catherine

Great idea. I’m in! Kids are heading to VBS this week so a post a day may actually happen!! Love what you say about overcoming perfectionism–just what I need to hear.

  22. Rosemary

Would it be cheating horribly if I started counting from this past Thursday or Friday? I have posted for three days straight, which is NOT common for me at all! I definitely need to get over perfectionism though … so I’ll jump on board!

  23. TheReluctantWidow

I am looking forward to this challenge! I haven’t been posting regularly enough. Not that I have a ton of readers, but blogging is cathartic for me. The fact that a few people have stopped by and mentioned that what I have said resonates with them, or that they feel validated in their own experiences in widowhood, that’s a bonus.

  24. Ruth Ann

Jennifer, I’ve been very lax at blogging this summer. I considered it a Sabbatical. I think participating in your challenge will get me back into the swing.

  25. jen

I’m getting in touch with my inner lemming at 4 a.m. while being up sick coughing up a lung so I figure I might as well do some blogging. 🙂

  26. Lisa Schmidt

Drama queen – an epic blogging challenge would be more like a post a day during Lent, or a post a day for a month. 🙂

    Looking forward to linking up!

  27. Chris

    Thank you, Jen!
    Love this idea!
I am just back from a tech/blog break, as my family was on a cross country camping trip. So many ideas for posts and this will get me moving as of right now.
Thank you for graciously hosting. I look fwd to reading as many of the others’ posts as possible!

    God bless!

  28. Joy @ Caspara

Such a great idea!! I love your picture, too! Totally how I feel! I’m biting. This is just the kick in the pants I needed!

  29. Anne

I haven’t been writing other than for work lately, and it’s been weighing on me, when along comes this. It seems silly to ignore something so obvious, you know? God knew I needed the push, clearly. Thank you for hosting!

  30. Nancy

It did! It did! Just sitting down and starting to write helped me find my blogging groove (I didn’t even know I’d lost it). Now to just keep on keeping on… thank you!

  31. Christie Martin @ Garden of Holiness

I am signing up for this. I need this. I also think I may be crazy to be even attempting it. But then again, you managed to get a book out the door with a newborn. I’m barely managing the laundry. Well, you did say it didn’t have to be well thought out. Editing is not my strong suit at the moment: keeping my eyelids from meeting is.

    But I’m doing it.

  32. Allison

OK, I’ll give it a go!

  33. sara mcd

Stupid autofill put in an old post. *sigh* I deleted my link and relinked. I hope that’s OK.

  34. Melissa @ Dyno-mom

Wow, I usually try to do five a week but this is good for me, too, since I have been struggling to make the time to blog. I am on it now. A day late, but late is better than never. Right?

  35. T

Can you delete my #227 from the linkup? I entered it wrong and it just goes to a photo instead of to my actual blog! 🙂 I re did it on number 245 thanks to one of your kind readers who alerted me to the problem. 🙂 Thanks!

  36. Birgit Atherton Jones

I’m really enjoying this and it’s pushing me to be more spontaneous. Sometimes I seem to over-think and over-work my posts. Thanks for the opportunity!
