The Something Other than God release party begins NOW!

April 28, 2014 | 48 comments

Please indulge me in a little egregious use of the Caps Lock button, because there is simply no other way to say: THE BOOK IS BEING RELEASED TOMORROW!!!!!

That means it’s time for a party.

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out what an online party would look like, and here’s what I came up with: We get together to read and discuss (and take ridiculous picture with our copies of) Something Other than God, and you guys get fabulous prizes in return. Sound good?

Below are nine different ways you can do awesome things to be entered to win awesome stuff. A few important details:

  • All of the contests begin right now and will end on Friday, May 16 at 11:59 PM CDT.
  • I realize that the book doesn’t technically go on sale until tomorrow, but since some outlets shipped it a couple of days early, I thought we could just start now!
  • I will be on email and replying to comments to address any questions, but give me some time to respond. Things are crazy over here so I’ll probably get backlogged.
  • You can enter as many of the contests as you’d like.

Here we go!

Important Legal Disclaimer: I cannot be held responsible for any injuries you sustain from falling off your chair and screaming “THIS IS THE BEST THING I’VE EVER SEEN!!!!” when you read this list.

PRIZE: $100 Amazon gift card

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to simply stating “I bought a copy.” If you buy more than one copy, please send one email for each copy you bought.

  • You can enter for each copy purchased. (For example, if you buy four copies, send four separate emails to enter.)
  • You do not have to show a receipt to enter, but we will ask for proof of purchase from the winner.
  • If you win, the date of purchase on the receipt must be in the date range of April 29 to May 16.
  • Ebook, hardcover, or audibook purchases count.
  • Purchases from any vendor count.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

PRIZE: iPad Mini

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to simply saying how many copies you bought.

  • You do not have to show a receipt to enter, but we will ask for proof of purchase from the winner.
  • If you win, the dates of purchase on the receipts cannot be later than May 16.
  • Ebook, hardcover, or audibook purchases count.
  • Purchases from any vendor count.
  • These purchases count toward contest #1 (above) as well.
  • Purchases from any time count (i.e. pre-orders count the same as regular orders).
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

PRIZE: $100 Amazon gift card

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to with a link to your review.

  • Reviews at Amazon are preferable, but reviews at any online outlet that sells the book are great too. (Amazon will begin allowing reviews on 4/29.)
  • Even though GoodReads is not a retailer, we’ll count GoodReads reviews too.
  • The date of the review must be before May 17.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card +
a post here at my site introducing your blog to my readers

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to with a link to your review.

  • Something Other than God has to be a central part of the post (e.g. it can’t only be one of your items in 7 Quick Takes, or mentioned in passing in one place).
  • The post does not have to be a standard review (e.g. If the book inspires a reflection on a certain subject or a story you’d like to tell from your own life, that’s great!)
  • The post must contain a link to somewhere where you can buy the book (this is a good chance to use your Amazon affiliate code!)
  • The post must be published before May 17.
  • In order to qualify for the introduction to my readers, your blog can’t be total craziness. I’m not going to be strict about this — at all — but, ya know, if you have a site called, that’s not going to work.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to with the first names and last initials of whom you told (for example: “I recommended Something Other than God to Karen P., Mark S., and Thomas K.”)

  • It’s fine to take your best guess about who doesn’t currently follow my blog — you don’t need to start an inquisition to smoke out closet readers before you begin your recommendations.
  • Imaginary friends don’t count.
  • This is on the honor system! If you say you told three people, I believe you.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

PRIZE: $75 gift card to a restaurant of your choice to get food for your gathering +
a 15 minute live Skype chat with me

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to with a link to an Evite or other online invitation showing four or more attendees.

  • The primary purpose of the meeting should be discussion of Something Other than God.
  • It would be great if all attendees wanted to buy the book, but it’s not a requirement (library copies okay).
  • You need to create the invite and enter by May 16, but the meeting itself can occur any time before June 30.
  • One entry per group.
  • You can choose the restaurant, but it needs to offer gift cards for sale online.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.
  • I will arrange my schedule around the winner’s book club meeting to do the Skype interview. However, if the meeting happens to occur in one of the rare blocks of time I absolutely couldn’t do it, we can make special arrangements for the video call.

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card +
your selfie MADE INTO A T-SHIRT that

(oh my gosh this is just so awesome!!!)

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to with a link to your picture (if you posted it on a private social media account you can attach the picture to the email, but links are preferable)

  • This is not a random drawing. This is a performance-based contest that will be evaluated by an esteemed group of judges, so you’ll need to bring your A-game.
  • Selfies with any version of the book count (hardcover, ebook, or audiobook).
  • You should know that my entire life is about to revolve around looking at these entries.

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card +
your photo turned into magnets: one for your fridge, one for mine

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to with a link to your picture (if you posted it on a private account you can attach the picture to the email, but links are preferable).

  • This is not a random drawing. This is a performance-based contest that will be evaluated by an esteemed group of judges, so you’ll need to bring your A-game.
  • Pictures of any version of the book count (hardcover, ebook, or audiobook).
  • I don’t know if I will ever sleep again once these entries start coming in.

PRIZE: $25 gift card to Williams-Sonoma +
the recipe posted on my blog with credit to you

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to with the recipe and a brief description of the drink.

  • This is not a random drawing. This is a performance-based contest, so you’ll need to bring your A-game.
  • I will have a team of intrepid taste testers throughout the country trying these out, so let’s avoid exotic ingredients. (And I note that while fried scorpion garnish might not be exotic for me, it would be for other people, so it’s out. Sorry.)
  • It does not have to be an alcoholic drink. (A piece of Joe will die every time he sees a non-alcoholic recipe, but we’ll just exempt him from judging those.)

* * *

Okay, those are your nine missions! You can enter any and all of them.

And with that, the SOTG launch party officially begins.

  1. Eric Rosenberg

I came across your blog over a year ago and have been reading it religiously (get it?!) ever since. I pre-ordered your book back in December and can’t wait to read it. It hasn’t been a particularly easy year but your writings never fail to lift my spirits and provide food for thought. Thank you

  2. Christine Johnson

I was not at all subtle about this book. Since the release date was announced, I’ve flatly told my family i wanted it for my birthday. Yesterday, as I left for a friend’s house for an afternoon garden party, I asked my husband what he’d do while I was gone. “I’ll probably weed hack some…”

“And order my birthday present, RIGHT?”

Totally not my usual style. But I WANT THIS BOOK.

BTW, he ordered it last night. Hooray!!!!!

  3. Erica Saint

I am looking forward to seeing your book show up on my Kindle! I can not wait to read it! Conversion stories are some of my favorite books to read.
I know your book is going to be excellent.
Congratulations and thank you for being such a wonderful example of our Catholic faith!

  4. Tacy

This is SO great. πŸ™‚ God bless!

  5. Paul Forgette

I’m going to pray for Joe. For the next couple of weeks people will forget he exists. He will be known as the husband of Jennifer, author of the awesome book, “Something Other Than God.” His life will be changed forever.

  6. Moira

Oh Jen!!!!! I laughed so hard! That last picture… !!!!

  7. dweej

Oh my gosh. The gif at the bottom. DYING.

  8. Tracy Bua Smith

Well I just had another first…falling off my chair from reading a blog post! πŸ™‚ This is so cool, fun, and fantastic! I can’t wait to read your book and hopefully celebrate along with you with the entries!

  9. Jeni

Already getting the ball rolling for #6. Hoping to combine it with #9.

  10. Lynne

    game on

and may the odds be ever in my favor!

  11. Smoochagator

I pretty much just adore you because of this post, ESPECIALLY the gif at the end πŸ˜‰

  12. Cate

Number 7 is the BEST! I’ll be gathering my sword and heading out to the horse barn the moment my copy arrives! πŸ˜‰

  13. Danielle

Um, ya. Best competition EVER!! Thanks for being a big bad amazing writer and sharing your story but not taking yourself too seriously. πŸ™‚

  14. Gina

So, if this isn’t the best way to get me to move your book to the TOP of my reading pile as soon as it hits my doorstep, I don’t know what is. SO FUN!!!!

And now I will be stalking the mail carrier, the UPS man, and whomever else might possibly be delivering packages from Amazon this week.

  15. Agnes

Ya’ll have no idea how excited I am about this book and about these contests!!! You are sooooooo creative Jen!!! Amazon already e-mailed me at the beginning of this past weekend that my book now has a ship date…so it should be arriving soon!!! Can’t wait to read it and to have some fun with the contests. MISSION ACCEPTED JEN!!! πŸ˜‰ ;-D

  16. Mark D

If you haven’t noticed, a discussion of your book is currently on the frontpage of reddit!

  17. Kelly M.

You can just toss a couple of those gift cards in the mail right. now. because you know when it comes to crazy selfies and location shots THIS GAL is bringing the heat.
WATCH OUT PEOPLE; I’m serious as a heart attack!

    • Jennifer Fulwiler

Let me just vouch for her that she means it. Be afraid, people. Be very afraid.

      • Jeannie

I KNEW Kelly would outclass me! Curses!

    • nancyo

      I thought of Kelly immediately when I saw #7, #8, AND #9.

  18. Ann-Marie

  19. Lauren

I pre-ordered your book a few weeks ago and can’t wait to read it! I discovered your blog recently and it was instrumental in inspiring me after years of considering becoming Catholic to finally take the plunge and attend my first RCIA class this past Sunday. Thank you for writing so eloquently about your journey to faith!

  20. Amy

AAAHHH! I’m so excited for you. I must think of an epic selfie idea. . .

  21. Terri

I am a top 250 reviewer on Amazon and would love to get a copy for review.
I’ve recently read and loved Secret Thoughts of an Unlikely Convert:
    Anne Lamott’s Traveling Mercies
    Gospel Amnesia by Luma Simms

    Okay, I hated this one:

But seriously, I would love to read your book and I would give an honest and thorough review.

  22. Lexi

Woohoo!! Amazon just sent me the email that my pre-order has been shipped!! Can’t wait to read it πŸ˜€

  23. Beth

Well, I’ve already sent the link to my husband to order for mother’s day. Let’s hope he’s on top of it!!

    • The other Becky

My book club meets tomorrow night. I can ask them then, but we already have our next few books planned, so if we do read this one it might be next year. Which is just a moment in God’s time, right?

  24. Leatrice

Ignatius press sent it to me friday, and its fabulous! I first found your blog and then your book through the CD from atheism to Catholicism. I couldn’t wait to order the book and had to wait anxiously for it to print. I am currently on chapter 10 and I giggled and read aloud random parts of your book my husband who just shook hiis head. I highly recommend it to anyone and I plan on forcing it upon my husband. PS I did enjoy the book plate which is one of the later, less legible ones. πŸ™‚

  25. LeAnna

yay! I’m so excited. My husband bought me a copy to cheer me up when I made the decision that my health was too fragile to accompany him to some European conferences this spring — I can’t wait for my copy to arrive so that I can get reading.

  26. Julia

Yay! Just checked my Amazon order status — I’ll be reading as of Thursday!

  27. The other Becky

Does the selfie have to be an actual selfie? Is it all right to get someone else to take a picture? I have never, ever taken a selfie, and I would like to have a good picture to submit. Assuming I ever get my copy. I preordered months ago but it hasn’t gotten here yet.

    • Jennifer Fulwiler

Important question! No, it doesn’t have to be you holding the camera. Just a picture of you. πŸ™‚

  28. Melanie B

I finished it last night. Seriously good read. I couldn’t put it down.

  29. Amanda

This is amazing! I’m SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!! And, the gif. Thank you for the gif.

  30. Angela

So sad!!!1 We pre-ordered last month, but because we live in Spain, it looks like the estimated arrival date for the book is the DAY THE CONTEST ENDS! Argh! I wanted to take a picture of the book in Pamplona’s bull fighting ring…weirdest place, right?? πŸ™‚

    • Jennifer Fulwiler

Noooo! Okay, we may need to do something about that. Let me think about this one. πŸ™‚

      • Angela

I will be recommending it to friends too!! I cannot wait to get it! My husband and I read Family First Creative together and we really loved it! It helped us both to think about the vision for our new family (newly weds, baby on the way). It particularly helped me since I am a Ph.D. researcher in philosophy whose job it is to write. What I loved about it the most is how much it emphasizes family vision and pursuing one’s talents within the context of relationships. It was great, Jen so thank you! Can’t wait to get the book here in Spain. And I am excited to be celebrating with you from here!

  31. Tracy Bua Smith

I forgot to add that I heard part of your radio interview on Carolina Catholic (Relevant Radio) with Judi that you did during the Ignited By Truth Conference. I listened to the part about your scary medical emergency with your pregnancy. WOW! God is using you in amazing ways! What a joy it will be to read your book!

  32. el-e-e

Congratulations, Jen!! Enjoy this wonderful day!

  33. Jeannie

I stayed up late to dive in as soon as Amazon sent the link from my pre-order…I’m on Chapter 10, and I honestly don’t know whether I should feed and homeschool the children or let them go all Lord of the Flies and finish the book today! Congratulations, Jen, it’s a great read!

  34. Amanda

Argh, I pre-ordered from Amazon and even with Prime shipping it’s due to come the same day we leave for the UK!! I’m hoping hoping hoping it arrives before we leave so I can bring it with me!

  35. Catholic Lawyer Mama

Okay, seriously, BEST. CONTEST. IDEAS. EVER! But I think you need to seriously MANDATE that the people entering 7 & 8 sign a photo release or something because I WANT TO SEE THOSE PICTURES TOO!!! πŸ™‚ P.S. Happy release day to you!

  36. Sonya

I love the contest ideas! I can’t wait to do a book club. Do you have a book club question set to start us off, or do we get creative? (Maybe there are questions already in the back of the book? I am still excitedly awaiting my copy.)

  37. Nkechi Onochieuk-Smith

But Jenny from the block, this is not fair!! I live in Lagos ,Nigeria and would have won the bizarre Selfie for sure (bananas, goats, Lexus jeeps for juxtaposition) but by the time I arrive in London to receive my amazon order the competition would be closed !! You are a global superstar and your international readers should not be excluded. Oh the pain of living in the third world. Sniff.

  38. Nkechi Onochie-Smith

Sorry for the poor punctuation on my post. I could barely see what I was writing. I was typing with one hand using my phone, whilst my toddler was drooling over my arm, snoring. And my surname is not onochieuk-smith. It’s onochie-smith. Serves me right for trying to guilt trip you and playing the third-world card!!

  39. Rosemary

Can I send more than one epic selfie??? Or only one epic per person?
